The Shri Suktam is among the oldest surviving Sanskrit invocations of Shri-Lakshmi, preserved in the khila (appendix) portion of the Rigveda. Its verses are addressed to Agni as Jatavedas, asking the fire to bring Lakshmi — described through gold, the lotus and the elephants that attend her — into the household of the one who calls. Because the hymn is liturgical rather than purely devotional, it is recited at the Shriyantra with an offering made at each verse rather than read straight through. The Samiti's acharyas follow that traditional pattern, with the devotee's sankalpa spoken before the recitation begins.
The Suktam belongs to the ritual layer of the Veda rather than to later devotional literature: each verse accompanies an oblation, which is why it is treated as a homa-mantra and not only as a stotra. In the Shri Vidya tradition it is recited before the Shriyantra because the yantra is understood as the seat of the same power the hymn addresses, so the words and the diagram are worked together rather than separately.
