In this family of rites the puja is not the whole observance: it is followed by a homam in which the same mantras are used again, this time with oblations poured into the consecrated fire. The tradition treats the fire as the means by which what has been worshipped is carried and completed, which is why a homam customarily closes an extended Sri Chakra observance. In a Navavarana Homam the nine levels worshipped in the puja are invoked into the fire in the same order and receive their offerings there. The packages below scale from a single puja-and-homam sitting to a full yagna held over more than one day.
Puja and homa are treated as two halves of one rite rather than as alternatives: the deity is worshipped in the yantra and then offered to in the fire, and the sequence is preserved in every level of the Shri Vidya tradition. The Shri Suktam's own Rigvedic usage — a verse, then an oblation — is the same principle applied to a single hymn.
