Navavarana means 'nine enclosures'. The Sri Chakra is not a single figure but nine nested ones, and Navavarana puja worships them in sequence: the outer bhupura first, then each inner avarana with the goddesses who preside over it, until the worship arrives at the bindu at the centre. The rite is long because nothing in it is abbreviated — every enclosure receives its own invocation, its own offerings and its own mantras before the next is opened. It is the most complete form of Sri Chakra worship in ordinary practice, and in this tradition it is the ground on which the Sahasranama and the Vidya japa are built.
The nine enclosures are read as coverings that stand between the worshipper and the centre, and the puja's inward movement is understood as their removal one after another. That is why the rite is always performed in order and never in part: the sequence is the meaning. Navavarana is traditionally taken up on Purnima, on Fridays and through Navaratri.
