Shivlinga Pratishtha Puja is a sacred consecration ceremony performed for establishing a Shiva Linga in the place where it will be worshipped. The traditional rite includes purification of the worship space and the Linga, installation in its prescribed place, invocation through sacred mantras, and the commencement of regular worship. In the fuller form known as Prana Pratishtha, the ritual invokes the sacred presence of Lord Shiva into the installed Linga through prescribed mantras, Nyasa and consecration procedures. The ceremony is followed by the first Abhisheka and Archana, marking the beginning of its worship according to the relevant tradition. Shivlinga Pratishtha holds an important place in traditional Shaiva worship. The Linga Purana describes the installation of the Shiva Linga as a sacred act undertaken for the pursuit of Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha, and explains that the Linga and its pedestal represent Maheshwara and Uma. The Agni Purana also describes specific procedures for the installation and consecration of a Shiva Linga, including its proper placement, connection with the pedestal, mantra-based consecration and ritual bathing. The Skanda Purana describes the installation of sacred Lingas and emphasizes their subsequent worship with devotion.
