Pratishtha is the establishment of a linga in the place where it will be worshipped, and the tradition treats it as a rite in its own right rather than as a preliminary. The Linga Purana sets out the sequence: the site and the linga are purified, the linga is placed, and the invocation is made before any regular puja begins. Prana pratishtha is the fullest form — the invocation of presence into the installed linga, performed with the prescribed nyasa and mantras, followed by abhisheka and the first worship. In the Agamic tradition an image or linga is worshipped only after it has been installed and invoked; until then it is material. That is why pratishtha carries its own vidhi in the Linga Purana and its own muhurta, and why it is customarily followed immediately by the first abhisheka and the first archana rather than left for another day.
