Rudrabhisheka is the bathing of the Shivalinga while the Sri Rudram — the Namakam of the Krishna Yajurveda — is recited over it, closed by the Chamakam. Water, milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugarcane juice and other prescribed substances are poured in sequence, and the recitation, not the substance, is what gives the rite its name. The tradition names its levels by recitation count. Eleven recitations of the Rudram followed by the Chamakam make an Ekadasha Rudram; eleven Ekadasha Rudram make a Laghu Rudram; eleven Laghu Rudram make a Maha Rudram. The larger levels are correspondingly longer and are performed by a group of acharyas.
The Rudram is one of the oldest surviving hymns to Rudra and sits at the centre of the Yajurveda's own liturgy, where it is recited during the fire rites rather than as an isolated prayer. Pairing it with abhisheka joins the Vedic recitation to the Agamic worship of the linga, which is why Rudrabhisheka is treated as the principal Shaiva rite in the householder tradition and is offered on Mondays, in Shravana and on Mahashivaratri.
