Navagraha shanti worships all nine planetary deities in a single rite: Surya, Chandra, Mangala, Budha, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu. Each is invoked into its own position on the navagraha mandala and receives its own mantra and its own prescribed offerings — a grain, a cloth, a flower and a metal that the tradition assigns to it. Shanti here means pacification, not cancellation. The rite is the traditional response to a period the almanac marks as difficult, and it is offered for the household as a whole as often as for one person.
The nine are worshipped together rather than singly because the tradition treats them as a set whose positions are read in relation to one another. The navagraha mandala, on which each is given its own square, is what makes that simultaneity ritual rather than merely conceptual — the rite is arranged in the same geometry the almanac uses.
