Shri Maha Laxmi Temple stands beside Lakshmi Kund, the sacred tank from which the Luxa area of Varanasi takes its name. Goddess Mahalakshmi — the giver of prosperity, auspiciousness and grace — is worshipped here, and in Kashi she is also honoured as Mahalakshmi Gauri, one of the city's forms of the Divine Mother.
The temple precinct holds other shrines as well, among them a linga of Shiva as Ugreshwar, and the Mahalakshmeshwar linga — known locally as Sorahiya Mahadev — stands just above the kund.
Fridays and the days of Navratri are the busiest times of the week and of the year. Devotees traditionally bathe in, or take water from, Lakshmi Kund before their darshan.
The Kashi Khanda describes a pilgrimage through the forms of the Goddess in Kashi — Jyeṣṭhā Gaurī, Saubhāgya Gaurī, Śṛṅgāra Gaurī, Viśālākṣī, Lalitā, Bhavānī, Maṅgalā — and directs the devotee then to go to Mahālakṣmī "for the steady increase of prosperity". Local tradition identifies that Mahālakṣmī with the goddess worshipped at Lakshmi Kund.
In Kashi's Nava Gauri darshan, kept during the Chaitra (Vasantik) Navratri, Mahalakshmi Gauri is traditionally visited on the ninth day. Local tradition also associates the kund with prayers for one's ancestors and with charitable giving.
Prosperity, in this tradition, is understood as steadiness and auspiciousness in the life of a family, not only as wealth. These are matters of religious tradition and are recorded as such.

Reach Luxa – The temple is at Lakshmi Kund in the Luxa area; auto-rickshaws and rickshaws reach the area, and the last stretch is a short walk.

Darshan and offerings – Footwear is removed before entering; flowers and sweets are customary offerings to the goddess.
