Shri Lolark Kund lies at Bhadaini, near Tulsi Ghat in the south of Kashi, close to where the Asi meets the Ganga. It is a deep, stepped tank sacred to Lolārka — the Sun God in the form honoured here — and it is one of the oldest sites of sun worship in the city.
The name means "the eager sun": the tradition explains that the Sun, longing to see Kashi, became "lola" — restless with eagerness — and took up his place here. Lolārka is the first of the twelve Ādityas, the forms of the Sun that the tradition sets in Kashi.
Each year on Lolark Shashthi, in the month of Bhadrapada, the kund draws great crowds; couples in particular come to bathe and pray for the blessing of children. On ordinary days it is a quiet, striking place, well worth seeing for the steps alone.
The Kashi Khanda devotes a chapter to Lolārka. It places the Sun's shrine in the southern part of Kashi, at the confluence of the Asi with the Ganga, and explains his name: his mind became eager — lola — to see Kashi, and so he is Lolārka.
The text prescribes a holy bath at the confluence, with offerings to the ancestors, on the seventh lunar day of Mārgaśīrṣa or on a sixth that falls on a Sunday; a dip on Ratha Saptamī in the bright half of Māgha; and darshan on Sundays. It also praises bathing and giving there during a solar eclipse.
Lolark Shashthi, observed in Bhadrapada, is the great popular festival of the kund. These are matters of scripture and religious tradition and are recorded as such.
