Dedicated to Kal Bhairav, the fierce guardian deity of Kashi, whose blessings are traditionally sought before visiting other temples in the city.
Kaal Bhairav is worshipped here as the fierce guardian deity — the "Kotwal" (chief protector) of Kashi — and tradition holds that a devotee should seek his blessing before settling in or exploring the city. According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva manifested Bhairav to humble Brahma's pride and then appointed him eternal keeper of the city's boundaries. The present shrine, built in the Nagara style by the Maratha commander Sardar Vinchurkar in the mid-17th century, houses a silver-faced image of the deity garlanded with skulls and bearing a trident.
