Shri Gauri Kedareshwar Temple stands above Kedar Ghat on the Ganga, in the southern part of Kashi. Here Lord Shiva is worshipped as Kedāreśvara — the Lord of Kedāra, the name under which he is also worshipped at Kedarnath in the Himalaya — together with Goddess Gauri. Devotees regard the linga as self-manifested and worship it as Shiva and Gauri together.
Kedar is the anchoring temple of the southern part of the old city, which is traditionally called the Kedar Khanda, just as the northern and central parts gather around Omkareshwar and Vishwanath. On the ghat steps below the temple lies Gauri Kund, one of the sacred waters named in the temple's tradition.
For many devotees — the elderly especially, and those who cannot undertake the Himalayan journey — darshan here is how Kedarnath is honoured within Kashi.
The Kashi Khanda devotes a chapter to the greatness of Kedāra, and tells how he came to Kashi. The ascetic Vaśiṣṭha, living in Vārāṇasī, had vowed to make the pilgrimage to Kedāra in the Himalaya every year. When age at last made the journey impossible, Kedāra appeared to him in a dream and offered a boon. Vaśiṣṭha asked only that the Lord stay close to him — and Kedāra came to Kashi, "with only a sixteenth" of his power remaining in the mountains, and settled here in full.
The text says that seeing Kedāra in Kashi brings seven times the merit of seeing him after climbing the Himalaya. It names the sacred waters around the shrine — among them Gaurī Kuṇḍa and Kedāra Kuṇḍa — and recommends bathing and offering water there, and remembering Kedāra's name each evening.
