Shri Dashashwamedhyeshwar Temple stands in the temple complex at Shitla Ghat, the southern extension of Dashashwamedh Ghat — the busiest and most celebrated ghat of Varanasi, where the evening Ganga aarti is held. Here Lord Shiva is worshipped as Daśāśvamedheśvara, the Lord of the Ten Horse-Sacrifices, together with the linga of Daśahareśvara.
The ghat and the temple share their name with one of the best-known stories of Kashi: that Lord Brahmā performed ten horse-sacrifices here. The shrine offers a quieter Shiva darshan a few steps from the crowds of the main ghat.

The Kashi Khanda tells the story in its chapter on Daśāśvamedha. During the reign of the righteous King Divodāsa, Lord Brahmā came to Kashi and, with the king's help, performed ten great horse-sacrifices. The sacred water where he performed them was formerly called Rudrasaras; from then on it was known as Daśāśvamedha. Brahmā installed the linga Daśāśvamedheśa there and chose to remain in Kashi.
The text praises bathing at Daśāśvamedha through the bright fortnight of Jyeṣṭha, culminating in Daśaharā, and bowing to Daśahareśvara. It says that a holy dip there on Daśaharā carries the merit of the baths that conclude ten horse-sacrifices.
