Within the temple complex at Shitla Ghat — the southern extension of the historic Dashashwamedh Ghat — stand two Puranic forms of Shiva, Dashashvamedheshvara and Dashahareshvara, worshipped side by side in a sanctum notable for its flat, spire-less roof. The ghat takes its name from the legend of Lord Brahma performing a ten-horse (dashashwa) sacrifice (medh) here to welcome Shiva to Kashi, and was rebuilt in stone in the 1740s under the patronage of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar.
