Shri Annapurna Temple stands in Vishwanath Gali, immediately beside the Kashi Vishwanath complex, and the two are usually visited together. Annapurna — from anna, food, and pūrṇa, full — is Goddess Parvati as the giver of nourishment, worshipped holding a ladle and a vessel of food.
The tradition of Kashi holds that Shiva himself, as a mendicant, receives his alms from Annapurna in this city. The pairing of the two shrines — the lord of the universe and the goddess who feeds him — is central to how Kashi understands itself, and Annapurna's temple is among the most visited in the city after Vishwanath.
The present temple is attributed to the Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao I and dated to the 1720s; published sources give 1725 or 1729. Within it are shrines to Kuber and to Surya.
The golden image of the goddess is opened for darshan on only a few days each year, around Dhanteras and Annakut after Diwali. On those days the queues are exceptionally long; for an unhurried visit, choose another day.
Annapurna's worship is the worship of sufficiency: the prayer that no household, and no pilgrim in Kashi, should go hungry. The temple keeps that prayer alive through annadan — the giving of food — which devotees support and take part in, and free meals are served to visitors in the afternoon.
Tradition holds that Adi Shankaracharya composed the Annapurna Stotram, the hymn in praise of the goddess, in Kashi. Its closing verse asks her not for wealth but for the alms of knowledge and detachment — which is how many devotees still understand a visit here: as a prayer for the household's nourishment, and for the inner nourishment of wisdom.
During Navratri the goddess is honoured as a form of Durga, and Annakut, after Diwali, is the temple's great festival of offering. These are matters of religious tradition and devotional practice.
A Household That Never Wants – Devotees traditionally pray to Annapurna that their family should never lack food or sustenance.
Gratitude for Nourishment – Offerings of grain and participation in annadan are the customary way of giving thanks for what one has received.
Wisdom and Detachment – Following the Annapurna Stotram, many pray for the inner nourishment of knowledge as well as for daily bread.
Completing the Vishwanath Darshan – Pilgrims commonly regard darshan of Annapurna as the natural companion to darshan of Kashi Vishwanath.
Approach on foot – The temple is inside the narrow lanes of Vishwanath Gali beside Kashi Vishwanath; vehicles stop at the edge of the old city and the last stretch is on foot.
Expect security checks – Security arrangements in the area around Kashi Vishwanath apply here too; carry as little as possible.
Darshan and offerings – Devotees offer grain, flowers and food items, and may take part in or support the temple's annadan.
