Vastu Shanti is the rite offered to Vastu Purusha, whose form the tradition maps onto the plan of a building: each part of him is held by a particular deity and belongs to a particular direction, and that mapping is the Vastu Purusha Mandala. The rite has a fixed opening — kalash sthapana, then Ganesha puja, then the navagraha — before the Vastu worship begins, and closes with the offerings made to the directional deities. It is most often performed at a griha pravesh, but is equally kept for a shop, an office or a completed construction.
The mandala is not decorative: it is the diagram by which the site's parts are assigned to their deities, and the rite proceeds by it. Vastu shanti is therefore worship of a place rather than of a deity in a place — which is why it is performed at a building rather than only at a shrine, and why the same rite adapts to a home, a workshop or a field.
