Vastu dosha names a discrepancy between a building as built and the arrangement the shastra sets out — an entrance, a hearth or a water source in a direction the mandala assigns elsewhere. Where the structure cannot be changed, the tradition's response is propitiation of the deity of the direction concerned. The rite is the Vastu Shanti weighted toward that direction: the deity who holds that part of the mandala receives extended worship, and in the fuller forms the oblations are weighted the same way.
