Shraddha offered for three generations of forebears where the rites have gone unperformed — the tradition's remedy for a long lapse.
The Tripindi sequence performed in the traditional order, the three pindas offered for three generations of forebears.
The Tripindi sequence with a full tarpana, water and sesame offered to each of the named forebears.
The Tripindi joined to a full pinda-dana, the offerings made in the traditional manner after the sequence is complete.
The rite kept as a full anushthan across several days, with tarpana, pinda-dana and the prescribed recitations throughout.
The fullest form: Tripindi across several days with a closing homa, offered for all three generations of both lines.
Tripindi means three pindas: the rite offers for three generations of forebears together. The tradition prescribes it where the shraddha of a line has not been kept over a long period, or where a forebear in any of those generations died young or without the rites being completed. It is performed once for the lapse it addresses rather than annually, and is frequently paired with Narayana Bali where a particular death is also in question.
Three generations is the span the shraddha rites address in ordinary practice — father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and their counterparts on the maternal side. Tripindi gathers all of them into a single offering, which is what makes it the prescribed response to a lapse rather than an especially large annual shraddha.
