Tarpana is the offering of water mixed with sesame, made with the sacred thread worn over the right shoulder and the water poured through the fingers in the prescribed manner. Pinda-dana is the offering of pinda, balls of cooked rice with sesame, made for the departed. These are the two rites at the base of all ancestral observance; every larger rite in this section contains them. The packages below offer them on their own, from a single tarpana through to a full shraddha with pinda-dana.
Kashi is one of the principal kshetras for these offerings, alongside Gaya and Prayag, and the tradition holds that the rites carry particular weight when performed at such a place. The Samiti performs them here. The order — tarpana, then shraddha, then pinda — is fixed, and the packages follow it.
