Pitru dosha is the name the tradition gives to the condition of a family whose obligations to its forebears have gone unmet — rites not performed, a death whose shraddha was never completed, a line whose tarpana has lapsed. The response prescribed for it is not a remedy but the performance of what was owed. This puja is that performance in its ordinary form: sankalpa in the names of the forebears, tarpana, and the offerings the tradition assigns, with the fuller packages adding shraddha and a closing homa.
The obligation to the pitrs is one of the three rnas — debts — the tradition names for a householder, alongside those to the rishis and the devas.
