The katha is the heart of this observance. Five chapters, narrated by Suta Muni to the rishis at Naimisharanya, tell of a poor brahmana, a woodcutter, a merchant and his family, a king and a group of cowherds — stories that turn on a vow made, and then kept or forgotten. The recitation is made before the assembled household, since the katha is meant to be heard rather than read privately. The puja precedes it and the aarti closes it, with the prasad distributed to everyone present.
The katha's five stories are not illustrations added to a rite; they are the rite's teaching, and the tradition holds that the vrat is incomplete without hearing them. That is why the observance is kept with the family gathered and the prasad shared, and why the recitation, rather than the offering, is what the day is named for.
